What you need to know
Professional whitening uses a stronger agent than a drugstore kit and is applied with your gums isolated, which is what makes the higher concentration safe. We check for decay and gum disease before starting, because whitening an untreated tooth is uncomfortable and the result does not last.
There are two routes. In-office treatment is done in a single appointment. Custom take-home trays are made from impressions of your teeth and used over a couple of weeks at your own pace. Some patients do both — a session in the chair, then trays to maintain it.
Did you know…
Whitening does not change the color of crowns, veneers, bridges, or fillings. If you have restorations in the front of your mouth, whitening the teeth around them can make them stand out. That is worth planning for, and it is a reason to whiten before, not after, any cosmetic work.
